Navigating today's workplace is like playing a video game. In order to survive, you need to have a plan and strategize well. You cannot just go in and have no clue about what you're doing. It also helps if you have an ally to win your goal. In an environment where everyone is constantly trying to get into the good side of your company's "Powers-that-Be", there is no better ally than your own boss.

In a survey conducted by Gallup, more than 1 million employees list quitting their jobs because of a bad boss or immediate superior. Calling someone a "bad" boss can be subjective because if you are able to create a good enough relationship with them, chances are you'd never consider leaving in the first place.

So how do you charm your boss enough to get them to warm up to you? Read on and follow these five surefire tips to get your boss to notice and like you.

Tip Number One: Get to know your boss in and out of the workplace.

Most employees feel awkward even thinking about getting to know the person they work for. This is understandable as other employees may look at it as sucking up to the boss. The best way to avoid being called a lap dog is to begin the relationship as naturally as you can. Get to know your boss in and out of the boardroom by keeping an observant eye on him/her. Take note of things that bring a smile to his/her face while keeping tabs on his/her pet peeves. When you get the chance to talk to them, carefully maneuver the conversation towards a topic where they can talk about it in detail. This could be during lunch, downstairs while smoking, or when you both board the elevator on the way to the office.

Tip Number Two: CC your boss in all outgoing emails.

This sounds like an overkill but sending out emails"”lots of them, is definitely a good sign of being productive at work. Including your boss in the loop enables him to see how hard at work you are and at the same time allow him to track your progress with whatever assigned task you are working on currently. Sure he may ask you to stop because your emails will leave him with a full inbox but more often than not, this tactic will work like a charm.

Tip Number Three: Bring a notepad with you all the time.

Whether you're walking over to a colleague's desk to discuss about what you both did over the weekend or doing your hourly rounds of collecting hot office gossips (which hopefully you're not), make it a habit to carry with you a notepad all the time and act as if you're taking down notes every time. It doesn't matter if you're actually making a list of things you're planning to do this weekend because your boss is likely to think that you're working hard on a project or another. Of course, it would be better if you're truly jotting down important notes while on the go but in any case, just bring along a notepad or a planner with you"”it's a surefire way to get some bonus points from the boss.

Tip Number Four: Be the first to update your boss of new developments.

Now this one here is a bit tricky as you're likely to earn the ire of other colleagues but if you're up to it, then by all means go for it. Make your boss look like he's always ahead of the rest of the management team by being the first to inform him about any major business developments within the company. You have to be careful about the information you feed him though. Don't tell your boss about things that you have not verified at least a hundred times. Always make sure that whatever info you relay to him is 100% true.

Tip Number Five: Always be ahead of deadlines.

The last thing you want to happen is to turn in a task that's days overdue. If you want to charm your boss, you have to be reliable and one of the best ways you can showcase this if when you're always turning in work ahead of deadlines. Like everything you do, you have to be meticulous and 100% accurate because even if you're always the first one to finish but if your boss sends your work back for revision, you won't earn those brownie points.

While you don't have to please your boss every time, it will work on your favor if you have a solid, harmonious relationship with him or her. More than charming your boss though, your main objective is to deliver on what you're expected to deliver 100% of the time. If you do this, you don't even have to work hard in charming your boss because it'll eventually follow.
