Today more than ever, all eyes are focused on how leaders are confronting the challenges of the changing times. From the proactive team manager to the visionary CEO, employees are learning much and taking inspiration from their bosses at work.

Learn what it takes to be a genuinely respected leader this National Boss Day.

Be ready to adapt to changes

Becoming the perfect boss is not easy, especially in these times of crisis.  If you are eyeing to land an executive or managerial position, it is crucial to recognize how the pandemic has changed the dynamics of the workplace.

Talk to your team and discuss how you want to get things done. Set regular meetings, either weekly or every two weeks, to check in on how everyone is doing. Have clear goals and communicate these with your co-workers. Because everyone is still adjusting to the new normal, expect hiccups as you go along and be prepared to address them.

Stay on top of things

A good leader is able to readily assess a problem or situation. Look at the bigger picture while still paying attention to the details. Identify priorities and learn how to delegate specific tasks to those who are equipped to handle them.  Collaborate when trying to reach a decision that affects your colleagues. Value accountability, and give credit where credit is due.

Communicate effectively

Being able to express one's thoughts is vital in building partnerships and teams within firms. Make sure you are clearly understood when getting your point across. In the same way, take time to listen and appreciate the contributions of your team members.

Be your own team's champion

An efficient and effective teamwork brings out everyone's strengths, so be your own team's cheerleader. As a boss, it is a must to have your team's back. Commend team members when work is successfully accomplished. When problems arise, encourage them to step up.Â

Put premium on mentorship

Whether working face-to-face or in the digital space, encourage your team to go beyond what they can offer. Push them to do better to achieve their potential. Take time to sit down, evaluate, and share your expertise.Â

Show you really care

Employees may put you on a pedestal because of your expertise and experience. However, the more honest reason why they look up to you is also the simplest: It is because you sincerely care for them"”they are not merely your subordinates. You see your team members as partners and collaborators in achieving specific goals. Remember that people work best when they are valued by those who matter to them.

Being a highly esteemed leader does not happen overnight. It takes a lot of effort, but the payoff is well worth all your hard work.

Happy National Boss Day!
