A lot of people easily equate career progression to a promotion. However, this is not the case at all times. There are a number of ways by which your career can advance, and these "advances" are not necessarily a one-up.

Regularization and Termination of Employment

Advancing your career upwards may not be possible in many circumstances because your organization's higher echelons are currently fully occupied. When all your department's supervisors and managers are in their prime and there are no signs of them resigning or retiring anytime soon, then you will have to wait a bit longer. But then, other options such as lateral movements or keeping your position but assuming more responsibility may arise. The key for you is to be alert and ready just in case the opportunity suddenly arrives.

The bottom line is, while there still aren't any positions available in your company for a promotion, you need to be ready all the time. You will never know when a better opportunity comes along, maybe in your department, in your organization, and even outside it - where the proverbial "greener" grass can be found. If you do not have the skills ready to take your career to the next level, you will always be passed over. Even in the worst case scenario where there are still no available opportunities in the future, at least you've done a lot to make yourself more marketable in the job market.

Abi Lomboy, HR manager for JobStreet Philippines, gives us tips on how to constantly improve ourselves so that we may always be ever ready for the next career challenge. Click here for more advice on preparing yourself for your next steps.
