Signs That an Online Job Is Legit

In today's digital age, more businesses are starting to offer full-time and part-time online jobs in the Philippines. This allows jobseekers to work from the comforts of their home and, depending on the company, enjoy a more flexible schedule. Unfortunately, as work-from-home opportunities increase, online job scams have also become more prevalent.

What is an online job scam?

It is another way for scammers to gain access to your personal and financial information. They prey on jobseekers looking for career opportunities by posting fake job advertisements on online job sites or emailing them with irresistible job offers. The scammers will then ask you to pay for different services or fill out a form from a phishing website.

So, how can you tell whether that remote job is a scam or not? Here are telltale signs you can use to identify legit online jobs.

The job postings have a clear job description.

Legitimate online jobs provide you with a detailed description of the role's duties, responsibilities, salary range, and required qualifications.

If you stumble upon a job advertisement with vague job descriptions, you can contact the company and ask for further details. A real organization will provide you with more information about what the role entails.

However, if the hiring manager brushed you off or listed general qualifications (i.e. must be at least 18 years old and have access to the internet), there is a good chance that it is a scam.

The hiring managers send professional email.

Some recruiters reach out to potential candidates through email. If you have received a job offer in your inbox, you should:

  • Check their email address. A hiring manager from legitimate companies uses a professional email address (ex. [email protected]) instead of their personal account (ex. [email protected]).

Some scammers will also try to trick you by using a domain name that is similar to a company's professional email address. For example, if the organization's domain name is "@yourcompany.com," they will use "@your-company.com."

To avoid getting scammed, it is a good rule of thumb to search the web for similar email addresses to ensure that it originated from a real business entity.

  • Look out for spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammatical mistakes. Real organizations hire professionals who can write their emails well. That means you will not see those errors on legit online job offers.
  • Search for the company's contact information. An email from a legitimate company should include basic details, such as their website, email address, and phone number. Unprofessional emails without contact information most probably come from online scammers.

The company has a professional website.

Look for the organization's website and see if it looks professional. A legitimate company website displays the organization's contact details and social media accounts for customer inquiries and engagements. It should also include the physical office address of the organization.

Aside from those, you should also check for glaring spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammatical mistakes within the website. One of the reasons organizations hire a content marketing team is to avoid those errors. So, if you have spotted striking mistakes, then it is probably not a legitimate company website.

The organization pays for everything.

Real companies do not ask candidates for money. If the hiring manager asks you to purchase software or pay for a training session, then consider that a red flag. Organizations allocate a budget for those, and they provide them to their talent pool for free as their way of investing in their career development.

The company does not ask for your personal information.

Unless you are already hired, companies will not ask you for personal information, such as your bank details and social security number. These are confidential data and should only be given once you have established that they are a legitimate organization.

Be it a career opportunity online or offline, make sure to always do your research about the company. It helps determine the legitimacy of the job and the organization and provide you with important information that you can use during your job interview.
