What is AI (artificial intelligence) and does it pose a threat to our jobs?

Since the release in November 2022 of OpenAI’s ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), the AI chatbot has been used to write student essays, cover letters for job applications, and even write academic articles. It mimics human writing so well that there have been reports of some companies letting go of workers and relying on chatbots for their writing requirements.

This has led many to fear that they will lose their jobs to AI. But is this indeed the case?

What is AI?

Tendency of AI to generate misinformation

At the present stage of AI development, many users have found errors in the content chatbots generate. These range from errors of fact, to basic math and coding mistakes. This poses a risk to businesses using AI output without it first being checked by a human.

Security/privacy threats

Data entry clerk

With the introduction of automated and intelligent data entry systems, more companies are eliminating the need for humans in this position and turning to AI to quickly and accurately enter data.

How to Not Lose Your Job to a Chatbot

The use of AI is rapidly increasing in many industries, and it is important to be aware of the potential implications of this technology. To prepare for the future, it is important to continuously update your skills and stay ahead of the curve.

Do We Really Risk Losing Our Jobs to AI?

While AI is expected to take over certain jobs, it has both pros and cons. Overall, many jobs still require human judgment to avoid error and bias. Much of AI output at present still needs to be edited and checked by a human before use. We can think of chatbots as productivity enhancing tools that can help us do our jobs better and faster, rather than replacing humans completely in many jobs.

With the right knowledge and skillset, you won’t lose your job to a chatbot. It’s important to determine for yourself how you can upskill and future-proof yourself, and start working on it now.
