What's it like to be an Assistant Manager?
Assistant Managers, also called Associate Managers, usually work in offices or commercial establishments such as restaurants or retail stores. While those in an office are often involved in staff management and human resource concerns, Assistant Managers in retail businesses also focus on maintaining inventory, arranging displays, and securing the day’s earnings.
Tasks and duties
- Monitoring daily workflow.
- Reporting directly to the manager.
- Supervising distribution of responsibilities among employees.
- Assisting in hiring, coaching, and supervising staff.
- Evaluating employees.
- Implementing office procedures.
- Resolving workplace conflicts and issues.
- Maintaining customer relations.
- Formulating strategies to better target business goals.
While their duties differ depending on their company’s industry and organizational structure, they all assist managers in boosting workplace productivity and employee retention. While performing managerial duties, they can act as mediator between management and staff or customers. They also communicate procedural changes to employees, and ensure their compliance.
How to become an Assistant Manager
This role is a step below Manager, and requires a combination of hard and soft skills developed from professional experience and a sound educational foundation.
- Finish a four-year degree. While hirers do not typically specify a degree, completing a course in business management, business administration or a related field will equip you with knowledge in business operations and financial management.
- Gain three to five years of relevant work experience. Employers usually prefer applicants with experience in leadership in their specific industry. Experience in entry-level roles such as Sales Associate, Customer Service Representative, Administrative Assistant or other similar titles may be beneficial.
- Continue learning while working. Participate in seminars, enroll in online classes, and get professional certifications. This shows employers your passion for self-improvement.
- Consider completing higher education. A masters degree in a business-related field can help grow your career. From Assistant Manager, you can move on to General Manager and eventually Managing Director.
