What's it like to be a Health and Safety Officer?
A Health and Safety Officer’s primary role is to ensure that the workplace and working practices comply with local health and safety regulations and standards. This is to ensure that the company remains clear of any violations and maintains its employees’ welfare. A Health and Safety Officer is in charge of making sure that the organization adheres to safety practices and avoids untoward incidents. They may also check for potential dangers and find ways to prevent accidents and injuries. They also develop policies that follow the laws and regulations in the Philippines about safety in the workplace. They are also assigned to train employees on safety practices and emergency procedures.
Tasks and duties
- Being knowledgeable of all health and safety codes and requirements in the Philippines.
- Staying up to date on the latest health and safety legislation and standards in the Philippines.
- Conducting risk assessments to identify potential hazards in the workplace.
- Creating and implementing strategies to minimize the risk of accidents, injuries, and other health conditions.
- Developing and implementing safety policies and procedures in compliance with Philippine health and safety regulations and standards.
- Training and supporting employees on safe work practices and emergency procedures.
- Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the company’s health and safety programs and making recommendations for improvement as needed.
- Working with management to develop and implement health and safety initiatives.
How to become a Health and Safety Officer
To become a Health And Safety Officer, one must complete a four-year degree related to health such as Nursing, Medical Technology, Pharmacy, and other related degrees.
Take up a bachelor degree related to health such as nursing, pharmacy, medical technology, or any equivalent course.
Complete the Basic Occupational Health and Safety Training through the Department of Labor and Employment.
Be on the lookout for any additional training or seminars that will allow you to learn more skills and upgrade your credentials.
