Job Industries Students and Career Planners Should Look Out For

How do we know? Because some of these jobs did not even exist until a few years ago.

As the growing industries continue to slice and dice various sectors into more specific disciplines, a whole new bunch of highly specific job industries emerge. Built or restructured based on new technologies, products and ideas, these emerging industries are growing at a very rapid (and almost volatile) pace. In the past few years, a great number of emerging industries made a quick transition to being growth or mainstream ones - case and point: the field of digital marketing and mobile application development.

The continuous growth of such industries only means one thing for career planners and future professionals - new job opportunities. The Project Management Institute (PMI), the world's leading not-for-profit professional membership association for the project, program and portfolio management profession, highlights the following industry sectors as potential growth areas.

For all students and career planners, here's a look at what's ahead of you.

Energy

We've already heard of white and blue collar jobs, but the energy sector has given rise to a whole new bunch of "green collar" jobs. The demand for professionals in the oil, gas and fossil-fuel extraction industry is still growing at a steady pace. But as the world is trying to look out for sustainable sources of energy to power the future, there is now a growing demand for professionals in the field of green or renewable energy. Job titles that are up for grabs include wind-turbine installer, solar fabricator and site prospectors. If these job titles bore you, wait "˜til you look at their salaries - and then you decide if you want any of these job titles or not.

While according to Don Albinger, VP of Renewable Energy Solutions, "There is a void in the education component of renewable energy" those who have a background in mechanical and electronics engineering can land high paying jobs in the energy sector.

Healthcare

"Industry Employment and Output Projections to 2022" is a report published on December 2013 by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report listed the industries with the fastest growing and most rapidly declining wage and salary employment. On top of the list of fastest growing job markets are 3 careers that fall under the health care and social assistance sector. The needs of the healthcare industry, however, are going beyond health specialists like doctors and nurses. The healthcare sector is expected to be in greater need of individuals with strong data management and tech background.

Health informatics, for example, is one of the fastest growing areas in the field of healthcare. In the simplest of terms, health informatics is about processing and delivering health information in the most efficient and timely manner. Those with healthcare related courses can break into the field of health informatics through additional training and certification.

Information Technology

The future of the information and tech industry is all about diversification of IT-related jobs. As Gustav Toppenberg, senior manager at Cisco Systems Inc, put it, "The IT industry has an insatiable thirst for growth." The growth of the IT industry is expected as organizations and business gradually transition into a faster and more efficient way of conducting business. As companies continue to expand in the emerging markets of Asia, a whole new plethora of opportunities are arising. Careers in the field of data and internet security continue to grow together with the field of software and mobile application development. The future is also bright for those with expertise in cloud computing, user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design.

As the roles in the field of information technology are being sliced more finely, those who are planning to break into the IT industry should be brave enough to venture more into specific fields of expertise. Nowadays, general knowledge won't cut it. Trainings and certifications are very important for those who want to find success in the IT field.

Hot new jobs and high salaries - these industries hold a great promise for future job seekers. While these industry sectors (and the various jobs they offer) may not necessarily fall under your field of interest, it is always important to build your career plans with the full picture in mind. Have a good look at where the industry and the job market is heading so that as early as now, you can already take ownership of your education and training.
