What's it like to be a Chemical Engineer?
Chemical Engineers are licensed engineers who are knowledgeable in chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics and can produce chemicals such as fuel, drugs, food and more. An average day for a Chemical Engineer typically involves working in an office environment with access to a laboratory or testing area where Chemical Engineers can produce, test and improve the projects they’re working on. Chemical Engineers commonly work in teams to create solutions. This career requires you to be a good problem solver, strong communicator, and organized team member.
Tasks and duties
- Applying knowledge in science, mathematics and engineering to address problems and create products.
- Designing and proposing production of chemicals, fuels, foods and pharmaceuticals.
- Directing the layout of equipment.
- Improving existing products and troubleshooting processes.
- Conducting research and development.
- Observing and collating data on assigned projects.
- Ensuring compliance with health, safety and environmental guidelines.
How to become a Chemical Engineer
It takes about six years to become a Chemical Engineer, after which, licensed Chemical Engineers can pursue careers in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, construction or petrochemical industries.
- Get a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from any accredited university. Most Chemical Engineering courses take five years to complete.
- Study for the Chemical Engineering Licensure Exam from the Professional Regulation Commission. Many graduates complete one extra year for additional study before they take the board exam.
- Pass the Chemical Engineering Licensure Exam. After six years of studying, you can be qualified as a Chemical Engineer once you pass the exam.
- Get a job as a Chemical Engineer or pursue a masters in chemical engineering to advance your skills further.
