What's it like to be a Computer Technician?
Computer Technicians are responsible for installing, configuring and maintaining computer systems and networks. Computer Technicians use their expertise in information technology to diagnose and provide solutions to problems, troubleshoot, and maintain high levels of efficiency for users by ensuring that the systems in place are right for the job. Apart from technical skills, successful Computer Technicians need attention to detail and skills in problem-solving, collaboration and communication.
Tasks and duties
- Maintaining inventory of computers and related equipment.
- Providing technical support.
- Installing software updates and keeping track of licensing requirements.
- Maintaining systems hardware.
- Ensuring network security.
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting network and computer issues.
- Creating training materials.
- Training new staff on computers and software.
- Ensuring data protection through testing and regular backups.
- Preparing error and maintenance reports.
How to become a Computer Technician
A certificate in computer technology is typically required to become a Computer Technician. Most employers also seek candidates with industry experience.
- Get a certificate in Computer Hardware Servicing and Basic Computer Programming. Courses are offered by accredited schools and institutions of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
- Gain experience through an internship or an entry-level position. Hands-on and supervised training hones your skills and prepares you to handle clients and issues on your own.
- Receive additional certification by taking short courses. This ensures that your knowledge and skills are up to date with current technology and software.
- Consider getting a college diploma to improve your credentials. This can improve your employability and help you pursue higher positions such as IT Manager.
