Database Administrators work in organizations that gather and deal with data, such as insurance companies, banks and retail businesses. Working alongside other information technology specialists, these professionals use software to create databases according to their company’s needs and goals.
Tasks and duties
- Ensuring that databases are functioning efficiently.
- Developing and customizing databases for organizations.
- Organizing existing data systems by merging or splitting them.
- Implementing security measures to maintain data integrity.
- Testing database software.
- Troubleshooting database problems.
- Training database users and informing them of system changes.
Aside from protecting data, Database Administrators also identify issues in database performance and make necessary adjustments. This can include the creation or installation of new database systems. They provide system backups in case of power failures, and verify data sources. Because they function within a team, Database Administrators need to have strong skills in collaboration and communication, as well as analytical thinking and problem solving.
How to become a Database Administrator
Database Administrators need technical knowledge and skills to succeed in this role. This requires a combination of education and experience.
- Complete a degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology or a related field. This arms you with basics on data structure and mining, database management systems and other relevant topics.
- Gain work experience. To build your career, you could start with an entry-level role such as Junior Database Administrator or Associate Database Administrator.
- Continue upskilling by learning more computer languages and programs. Certifications on database administration are available through software companies such as IBM, Microsoft and Oracle.
- Consider pursuing a masters degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems or a related field. Further study can create pathways to more senior roles.
