What's it like to be a Dentist?
Dentists treat oral diseases and provide dental care to ensure the oral health and hygiene of patients. They specialize in the treatment of tooth and gum conditions that can affect the mouth and its surrounding areas. These medical professionals are trained in using dental equipment to help identify and treat dental conditions.
Tasks and duties
- Performing dental health check ups with patients.
- Promoting and encouraging dental hygiene practices.
- Using techniques and tools to fill dental cavities and prevent the build up of plaque.
- Repairing or removing damaged teeth.
- Reviewing dental x-rays and diagnostics.
How to become a Dentist
To become a Dentist in the Philippines, you must meet certain requirements. This includes a formal qualification, work experience and passing an exam.
- 1.Take a recognized pre-dentistry course. This is a two-year requirement to prepare you for dental education, and will give you a strong background in health sciences and primary health care.
- 2.Complete a dental medicine course. This takes four years to complete and introduces dental science subjects and knowledge of oral health. The third year of this course trains you on current dental techniques and practical application with live patients under a clinical supervisor.
- 3.Pass the Dental Licensure Examinations. This board exam is supervised by the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC). Once you have passed, you will be issued a practice license that requires annual renewal.
