What's it like to be an English Teacher?
English Teachers are board-certified professionals tasked with educating students on the English language. This covers skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. English Teachers can be found in elementary schools, secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and private tutoring establishments. They can also opt to enter the public or state school system or work in a private school environment.
Tasks and duties
- Educating elementary, secondary, and tertiary students in English.
- Instructing students on spelling, grammar, composition, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
- Teaching students essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- Creating lesson plans to cover every term or semester of the year.
- Following lesson plans and executing them in an effective style of teaching.
- Creating a healthy learning environment that is conducive to learning.
- Identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each student and helping them hone their skills.
- Encouraging students to think critically during reading assignments or literature classes.
- Assigning students to analyze published work, such as media reports, novels, non-fiction books.
- Coordinating with fellow teachers and principals.
- Following guidelines published by the Department of Education.
English Teachers must possess expert fluency in the English language and the skills needed to impart knowledge to their students. English is often used in professional situations such as business meetings so it’s essential that English Teachers are able to prepare their students for the workforce.
How to become an English Teacher
English Teachers must be certified educators and experts in their chosen subjects. A degree and a license are necessary to become an English Teacher.
- 1.Get a bachelor in education, preferably a Bachelor in Secondary Education Major in English or a Bachelor in Elementary Education Major in English.
- 2.Study for the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) administered by the Board of Professional Teachers under the supervision of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).
- 3.Pass the LET. The LET exam is conducted twice a year: January and July. You may retake the test if you fail.
- 4.Apply for a teaching position at an educational institution of your choice.
- 5.Gain experience as a licensed and employed English Teacher at an elementary or secondary school.
- 6.Consider pursuing higher education, such as a masters degree or PhD in English, literature, or communications.
- 7.Apply for an English Professor position at a university or college after acquiring the required degrees and years in teaching experience.
