What's it like to be a Game Developer?
Through writing code, Game Developers convert concepts and ideas into games that can be played on computers, mobile applications, and consoles. Before games are released in the market, Game Developers test them to eliminate bugs and fix design problems. They can also work on finished games by adding downloadable content, resolving issues, and improving user experience.
Tasks and duties
- Writing and changing code to build a game’s framework and base engine.
- Repeatedly testing game design to improve it.
- Working with other team members to produce quality games.
- Checking game consistency across platforms.
- Identifying areas for improvement and making recommendations.
- Correcting errors in program code.
Game Developers may work freelance or for companies involved in game development. Typically, they work with a team consisting of Game Designers, Producers, and Animators to create characters, game landscapes, storyline, difficulty levels, and other features.
How to become a Game Developer
To work as a Game Developer, you need strong technical skills.
- 1.Finish a degree in information technology, computer programming or a related field. These courses will arm you with knowledge in programming, network basics, and calculus which are needed in game development.
- 2.Build solid skills in software engineering. Learning programming languages such as C++, C, C#, Java, and Python are essential in game development. Constantly refresh your knowledge through online classes, forums and industry news.
- 3.Gain professional experience through an internship and entry-level role. Before becoming a Game Developer, you can work as a Quality Assurance (QA) Tester to grow your knowledge in the gaming profession.
- 4.Prepare a portfolio, which will give employers an idea of your capabilities and experience.
- 5.Grow your career by progressing to Design Team Manager or Technical Director. You can also eventually own and operate a game development studio.
