What's it like to be an Interior Designer?
Interior Designers fulfill client requirements by ensuring the functionality, safety, and beauty of indoor spaces and choosing useful and decorative pieces. Their projects involve different properties from homes and hotels to cafes and office spaces. To create visually attractive interiors, Interior Designers research and select necessary items such as materials, furnishings, and decors. They make sure to meet their client’s budget, needs, and preferences while overseeing projects. Interior Designers may work as independent contractors or design firm employees.
Tasks and duties
- Consulting and strategizing with clients to identify their requirements.
- Formulating design and budget plans for clients’ approval.
- Submitting plans to building inspectors for code compliance.
- Working with Architects, Engineers and contractors regarding specifications.
- Selecting and procuring furniture, fixtures and fittings for the project.
- Coordinating team schedules and product deliveries.
- Ensuring client satisfaction until project completion.
- Being updated on design trends.
Interior Designers have knowledge of interior aesthetics such as color schemes, furniture placement, and use of space. They make sure all the design elements such as lighting, form and patterns are in harmony. Their finished work should not only be pleasing to the eye but also achieve its practical purpose. To accomplish their work, Interior Designers use technology tools such as computer-aided design (CAD) and design software like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
How to become an Interior Designer
Interior Designers need knowledge and skills that involve both creativity and technology. Because they work with different clients with unique needs, Interior Designers should be adaptable, and have a strong understanding of design.
- 1.Earn a college degree. Recommended fields include interior design, architecture, and industrial technology. Here, you can learn the basics of interior styles, furniture design, CAD, and other useful knowledge.
- 2.Undergo a practicum. This lets you gain work experience while studying. It’s ideal to obtain an internship in a design firm where you can witness and participate in the processes of interior design.
- 3.Pass the Interior Design Licensure Examination. After graduating from an Interior Design degree, take this exam conducted by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). This will boost your credentials and employability. The license is renewable every three years.
- 4.Gain work experience through entry-level roles. Junior Interior Designers help Interior Designers by providing 3D rendering, making drawings and details of projects, and coordinating with suppliers.
- 5.Continue developing your skills. This is required for you to renew your Interior Design license. Professional development also lets you build a portfolio that will let you gain more clients or full-time employment.
