What's it like to be a Kitchenhand?
Kitchenhands, or kitchen staff, assist a Cook at a food establishment. They are usually in charge of scullery, preparing ingredients, and cleaning the kitchen. Kitchenhands work at restaurants, hotels, cruise ships, and smaller eateries. This is an entry-level position for those looking to gain experience in the culinary industry.
Tasks and duties
- Keeping the kitchen area clean and organized.
- Receiving and cleaning raw ingredients from deliveries.
- Performing basic culinary functions, such as peeling and slicing.
- Washing dishes and kitchen utensils.
- Disposing of garbage from the kitchen.
How to become a Kitchenhand
Formal education is not required for this role, but knowledge about cleaning and sanitation functions, as well as an elementary understanding of kitchen functions are necessary for the job.
- Complete at least secondary education at a recognized school.
- Get experience working through an internship or by volunteering to assist in community commercial kitchens.
- Consider taking a TESDA course in cookery, food and beverage services, or a similar course.
- Take a Food Safety and Hygiene course from a certification provider. The course involves a closed book and practical kitchen exam to get certified.
- Get promoted to higher positions in the kitchen, such as Line Cook or Commis Chef.
