What's it like to be a Lawyer?
A Lawyer is a professional who is qualified and licensed to practice law. Apart from representing clients at trials in courtrooms, Lawyers also research evidence on legal cases, draft and prepare legal documents, and provide legal advice. Lawyers can work for government institutions, private companies, law firms or as independent practitioners.
Tasks and duties
- Drafting, interpreting, and discussing contracts with clients.
- Researching and gathering evidence for legal cases.
- Informing clients about their rights.
- Representing clients at hearings and trials.
- Defending clients at court.
How to become a Lawyer
Prospective Lawyers undergo about 7-8 years of education and need to pass the bar exam in order to become qualified for the job. To gain experience, you can become a Paralegal as a first job to observe Lawyers and court proceedings in action. Many aspiring Lawyers start out at law firms, climbing the ladder until they become a law partner or start their own private practice or firm.
- Graduate from a bachelor degree in political science, history, English, or another pre-law field. The number of units per subject requirement varies per law school, with schools typically prioritizing units in English, political science, philosophy, history, and economics.
- Graduate from law school. Law degrees typically take four years to complete, and is considered a prerequisite for taking the bar examination.
- Consider specializing in a branch of law such as corporate law, family law, or criminal law, and take the electives and tracks suited to your chosen specialization.
- Complete a legal internship at a law firm, court of law or another legal institution.
- Pass the bar examination. Eligible examinees are Filipino citizens who are at least 21 years of age, and of good moral character.
- Complete oath-taking under the Supreme Court and sign your name in the Roll of Attorneys to become a Lawyer.
- Apply for a position at a law firm and progress from a contract Lawyer to associate, and eventually to partner.
- Attend Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) by the Supreme Court every three years and pay the annual membership fee to the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.
- After building a track record and client base, consider starting a private law practice or starting your own law firm.
