What's it like to be a Logistics Manager?
Logistics Managers, also known as Supply Chain Managers, take on a supervisory role in warehouses and keep track of inventory. They ensure that products stored in the warehouses are in good condition. Logistics Managers also manage the entire order cycle; they plan the routes to be taken, calculate the necessary budget, and process shipments to improve business development and maintain customer satisfaction.
Tasks and duties
- Negotiating with carriers regarding schedules, contracts and rates.
- Overseeing logistics, warehouse, transportation and customer services.
- Researching shipping techniques, routes and carriers.
- Evaluating costs in every stage of the order cycle.
- Ensuring that processes comply with laws and regulations.
- Responding to any issues and complaints and providing solutions.
- Arranging the warehouse and cataloging goods.
- Determining cost effective measures to improve operational efficiency.
How to become a Logistics Manager
To become a Logistics Manager, you usually need a formal qualification. Most Logistics Managers complete at least a bachelor degree.
- 1.Take the ABM strand (Accountancy, Business and Management) for the last two years of your secondary school education.
- 2.Complete a bachelor degree in logistics management or business administration. This will make you a more competitive candidate, and these programs will introduce you to the nature of the work you’ll be getting into.
- 3.Seek an internship during your studies to expand your knowledge and build valuable experience.
- 4.Gain industry experience. Getting an entry-level job as a dispatcher, logistics analyst or supply chain specialist will equip you with skills and experience for the job.
