What's it like to be a Mechanical Engineer?
Mechanical Engineers are licensed professionals who can build mechanical machinery used across many industries. These machines can range from generators and car engines to factory equipment and gas turbines. A Mechanical Engineer can work in the energy sector building wind turbines or in the transportation sector overseeing train maintenance.
Tasks and duties
- Designing and developing machinery and mechanical products.
- Testing prototypes.
- Manufacturing new products and machinery.
- Identifying problems in machinery.
- Operating CAD technology to render accurate plans and designs.
- Preparing product reports.
- Conducting experiments to improve product designs.
- Preparing budgets and time frames for projects.
- Complying with safety standards.
- Collaborating with project managers, engineers, architects and clients.
Mechanical Engineers begin every project with research and design, before moving on to the manufacturing of the machine or product. Many Mechanical Engineers pursue specializations in their careers, preferring to focus on certain types of machines. They typically work with many stakeholders, including clients. As a result, they need to be strong communicators who can collaborate within teams.
How to become a Mechanical Engineer
Mechanical engineering is a licensed career track in the Philippines. You will need a bachelor degree as well as a license to become a Mechanical Engineer.
- 1.Pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME).
- 2.Complete on-the-job training during your fourth year of college at a mechanical engineering practice.
- 3.Study for the Mechanical Engineering Licensure Examination conducted by the Board of Mechanical Engineering of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).
- 4.Pass the exam to become a licensed Mechanical Engineer.
- 5.Gain years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer to get promoted to a leadership or managerial role in a company.
