What's it like to be a Personal Carer?
A Personal Carer helps individuals who need assistance with daily self-care. They typically support the elderly, persons with disabilities, or sick patients with long-term diseases. Personal Carers can live and work in their client’s home, or in nursing homes.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting the elderly and sick with basic healthcare.
- Preparing and serving meals as recommended by other healthcare providers.
- Performing housekeeping duties such as cleaning, laundry and grocery shopping.
- Facilitating the transportation of clients inside and outside of their homes.
- Recording observations of a client’s health for the reference of other healthcare professionals.
- Monitoring and administering certain medications.
- Providing emotional support and companionship.
How to become a Personal Carer
Candidates who complete a training course from TESDA or other recognized institutions are often preferred.
- In senior high school, consider taking the Technical-Vocational Livelihood track. While completing this track is not a requirement for Personal Carers, caregiving is a specialized subject offered under it that can give aspiring Personal Carers an edge in the role.
- For those who don’t take a caregiving-related track in senior high school, complete a training course from a TESDA-accredited institution.
- Gain experience by undertaking an internship at a nursing home or hospital, or with a private client.
