What's it like to be a Quality Control Inspector?
Quality Control Inspectors are tasked to supervise the production process. They ensure the quality and consistency of products that a company produces, or the goods that come into the company. These can be merchandised products from vendors or raw materials that are used to develop products.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing the quality of products that a company produces before being shipped, or the goods that come in.
- Sorting and rejecting products that do not meet or comply with the company’s set quality standards.
- Regularly performing inspections in the production area to monitor compliance with quality control processes.
- Documenting inspection results and making recommendations to management to improve or maintain product quality.
- Analyzing the product, including its size and functionality, and comparing it against a sample product or set specifications.
- Resolving issues in the production process related to quality.
- Training the production team on maintaining quality in the assembly line.
Quality Control Inspectors are expected to maintain safety standards within the production process. They also conduct evaluations, inspections, and create recommendations to improve the production process. Because of this, Quality Control Inspectors are expected to be detail-oriented and technical.
How to become a Quality Control Inspector
While there is no specific degree to become a Quality Control Inspector, a degree related to the industry you are entering is usually preferred by hirers.
- Take up a bachelor degree in a relevant discipline such as food technology (for the food manufacturing industry), chemistry or chemical engineering (for cosmetics or personal care), industrial engineering (for furniture or construction), or another relevant degree.
- Gain at least 1 to 2 years of experience in manufacturing to become a Quality Control Inspector.
- Be on the lookout for additional training or qualifications specific to your industry.
