What's it like to be a Bank Teller?
A Bank Teller handles financial transactions for bank customers during branch operating hours. As a customer-facing employee, they are expected to show excellent customer service skills and be familiar with bank policies and banking operations. When not facing customers, they tally cash from deposits and other customer transactions while documenting them to ensure that cash is accounted for at the end of the banking day.
Tasks and duties
- Performing routine bank telling tasks, including making deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and cash advances, receiving loan payments, and cashing checks.
- Maintaining and balancing the cash drawer on a daily basis by accounting for cash assigned, received, and disbursed.
- Verifying customer identity to perform authorized account transactions.
- Facilitating documentation between customer and bank computer systems.
How to become a Bank Teller
Most employers require a college degree to be employed in a bank. Proficiency in arithmetic, a keen eye for detail, and knowledge of current regulations and best practices in teller operations and other bank services are important in this role. Having strong math skills and excellent customer service can help to start your career.
- Complete a college degree. Having a business or finance degree is preferred by employers and gives you an edge in this role.
- Develop record keeping and accounting skills during an internship. Having foundational skills in math, accounting, and record keeping can help you become a successful Bank Teller.
- Take higher education courses. A masters degree in business, finance, or economics can help your career as a Bank Teller. This can help you advance to managing positions such as Branch Officer, Loan Officer, or Branch Manager.
