What's it like to be an Engineering Manager?
Engineering Managers are responsible for ensuring that key projects and engineering duties are fulfilled. They are responsible for planning engineering projects, overseeing the efficient running of projects, providing supervision and guidance to other engineers, as well as solving any engineering issues that come up. Their focus is on goals and the management of issues between business and delivery. They also coordinate and work with other departments within or outside their organization to ensure project completion and the use of best practices.
Tasks and duties
- Directing and managing budgets for projects.
- Overseeing the work of multiple teams.
- Planning and executing strategies for completing projects on time.
- Researching and developing designs and products.
- Determining the need for training and talent development.
- Hiring contractors and building teams.
- Ensuring products have the support of upper management.
- Providing clear and concise instructions to engineering teams.
How to become an Engineering Manager
To become an Engineering Manager, you need to complete a degree in engineering or engineering management. Experience in your field of engineering is usually required.
- Obtain a bachelor degree in engineering management or the engineering field of your choice. There are many engineering fields to choose from, including civil, mechanical, petroleum, computer, biomedical, electrical and chemical. Engineering courses usually take five years to complete.
- Secure a professional license. Most Engineering Managers cannot practice independently without being licensed. In the Philippines, it is always a prerequisite that the employee seeking employment in government agencies has passed the licensure examinations administered by the Philippine Regulation Commission.
- Most employers will also require you to have working experience. Normally, they seek applicants who have many years of experience in engineering roles.
- Obtain a masters degree in engineering management. Although not necessarily required, completing a masters degree will help you further your career.
