What's it like to be a Facilities Manager?
A Facilities Manager works closely with teams handling the planning and design of facilities, and maintains relationships with contractors, landlords, vendors, and other suppliers. They manage the facilities’ budget across sites and prepare financial reports. They also address any structural or repair issues as well.
Tasks and duties
- Serving as the point person for all construction and engineering-related projects within the facility.
- Overseeing the planning, design, construction, and repairs onsite.
- Coordinating with contractors, landlords, vendors, and suppliers for any building requirements.
- Ensuring compliance with building codes and safety regulations.
- Managing facilities budget across sites.
- Representing the facilities department in management meetings.
- Training, supervising, and conducting performance appraisals on facilities personnel.
How to become a Facilities Manager
To work as a Facilities Manager, formal education in engineering, facility management, or business administration is required.
- 1.Finish a bachelor degree in facility management, engineering (civil, electrical, or mechanical), business administration, or any other related course.
- 2.If you’re a graduate of an engineering course, secure a license by passing the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) licensure exam.
- 3.Gain experience in various companies in maintaining and managing facilities or projects, preparing cost estimates and financial reports, and planning for design and safety. Managerial experience will be an advantage.
- 4.Consider acquiring a certification in facilities management or project management from recognized universities and institutions.
