What's it like to be a Receptionist?
Receptionists work in the service industry. They open and close an establishment for customers and guests, ensuring that their inquiries, needs, and requests are addressed. They handle customer care for clients and guests in establishments in the hospitality, transport, storage and communication, real estate, business, community and personal service industries.
Tasks and duties
- Welcoming and assisting guests, visitors, or customers.
- Answering calls and inquiries.
- Setting appointments for clients or making and confirming reservations.
- Transmitting and receiving messages.
- Presenting bill statements and collecting payments.
- Receiving mail and packages and distributing these.
- Handling guest and client requests or complaints.
How to become a Receptionist
Most Receptionists have a bachelor degree in hotel and restaurant management or tourism. You may also complete any college degree and then take a vocational course in front office services.
- Complete a bachelor degree in hotel and restaurant management or tourism which includes courses in hospitality and service.
- Alternatively, complete the Technical and Education Skills Development (TESDA) vocational course Front Office Services NCII (Tesda) which runs for 442 hours or 2 years. Then successfully pass the Assessment and Certification Exam, National Certificate – Level II (NCII).
- Gain at least a year of experience in administrative work. Computer and telephone skills are required.
- Apply for Receptionist jobs in hotels and restaurants, transport or storage services, communication, real estate, or business services.
- With experience, you can move up to Supervisor.
- Successful Receptionists can also be promoted to Executive Secretary or Administrative Assistant.
