What's it like to be an Account Executive?
Account Executives find new leads for a business, while also handling several existing accounts and relationships. They should have extensive knowledge of their company’s products and services, so they can effectively match these with their clients’ unique needs. To do this, they need to keep abreast of industry trends, identify pain points in their clients’ businesses, and effectively sell solutions provided by their company.
Tasks and duties
- Finding potential clients.
- Maintaining smooth sales relationships by handling client complaints, providing updates on new offerings, and ensuring on-time delivery.
- Presenting the company's products and services to show their value to prospective users.
- Organizing and examining data to identify trends.
- Training and setting quotas for junior account executives.
- Filing and updating contact information of clients.
Account Executive is a mid-level role that requires strong skills in communication, time management, and flexibility. While these professionals spend a lot of time in the office, they may also be required to travel and meet with clients.
How to become an Account Executive
An Account Executive should have a strong sales background backed by an educational level that provides them with transferable skills necessary for the role.
- 1.Complete a four-year course. While you can become an Account Executive with any degree, a course in business, marketing, communication, or a related field will equip you with basic sales skills and knowledge.
- 2.Gain at least two years of relevant work experience. With an entry-level role in sales and customer service, you will learn to deal with clients and develop business acumen. Examples of these jobs include Sales Representative, Customer Service Representative and Sales Associate.
- 3.Continue learning by taking certificate courses in sales and marketing while studying.
- 4.Grow your career by pursuing senior roles in sales and marketing. An Account Executive’s career path may lead to Sales Manager and Marketing Manager, and eventually to more senior roles like Sales Director.
