What's it like to be a Business Analyst?
A Business Analyst determines whether a company’s activities are effective in earning revenue. Business Analysts draw insights from data, such as number of sales on a given date, social media engagement, and customer profiles. They create measures that indicate an improvement in profitability of a business, and then propose appropriate solutions to increase those measures from data gathered. Business trends are ever-changing, and it is important for a Business Analyst to be up-to-date on the current market situation in order to make effective recommendations.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting in-depth analysis of different data sets.
- Benchmarking a business’ activity with current market trends.
- Creating and presenting business analysis reports to stakeholders.
- Setting and monitoring metrics for business growth.
- Forecasting business solutions with corresponding budget to meet goals.
- Translating data to visual models and graphs.
- Conducting market research and updating knowledge.
- Making data-driven recommendations to increase business profitability.
How to become a Business Analyst
A bachelor degree is typically required for this role, although a certificate course in business analytics could also help you enter the industry. Apart from analytical skills, it is important for a Business Analyst to have excellent communication and presentation skills to help them translate their data findings to their clients and stakeholders.
- Complete a bachelor degree in any related field, such as business management, marketing or information technology.
- Undergo an internship or volunteer work at a recognized company.
- Master graph and presentation making. Understandable visuals are key for making successful presentations.
- Consider taking a certificate course, seminar or specialization in business analytics to gain an edge over other candidates.
- After gaining experience, you could be promoted to higher roles such as Senior Business Analyst or Enterprise Architect.
