What's it like to be a Chef?
Chefs have strong food preparation skills and are responsible for creating menus, preparing dishes, and coordinating the workflow of kitchen staff. A Chef is responsible for the preparation of a wide variety of cuisines. Some Chefs specialize in a particular area of the food industry and some adopt a variety of styles. As certified culinary experts, Chefs innovate and elevate dishes. They are expected to keep up with the constantly changing food culture.
Tasks and duties
- Developing and planning menus and daily specials.
- Creating preparation lists for kitchen crew.
- Managing food costing and inventory.
- Maintaining standards for food storage, rotation, quality and appearance.
- Ensuring compliance with applicable health codes and regulations.
- Establishing maintenance and cleaning schedules for equipment, storage and work areas.
- Scheduling staff and assisting in human resources processes as needed.
- Studying and revisiting culinary practices to bring new creations to fruition.
How to become a Chef
There are no strict educational or training requirements to become a Chef. However, those who want to reach Head Chef might take the culinary degree and apprenticeship route. Culinary Arts Programs are designed to train individuals who are interested in the field.
- Get a high school diploma. Most apprenticeship programs require a high school diploma to enter.
- Obtain a culinary degree. Graduating from a culinary school takes one to four years, depending on the program. The most common qualifications are diplomas, associate degrees and bachelor degrees.
- Gain practical work experience. Knowing how a kitchen and restaurant works is especially important to becoming a Chef. Your exposure to professionals in the kitchen will benefit your career.
