What's it like to be a Waitperson?
A Waitperson serves guests in a restaurant. They take orders, serve patrons their requested meals and prepare the bill at the end of the meal. One of their main objectives is to ensure that guests have a positive dining experience by providing excellent customer service.
Tasks and duties
- Greeting guests and accompanying them to their table.
- Preparing tables and making sure they are clean and have the right utensils and condiments.
- Taking food and beverage orders.
- Informing guests about special offers and dishes.
- Bringing dishes back to the kitchen to be washed.
How to become a Waitperson
There are no formal requirements to become a Waitperson aside from a secondary school certificate. Some employers prefer candidates with prior experience in restaurants or cafes.
- Complete your secondary school certificate. In senior high school, you can take the Home Economics strand in the Technical Vocational track. This allows you to take courses in cookery, food and beverage, and bartending.
- If you want to progress your career to a senior position in a restaurant, consider completing a bachelor degree in hospitality and restaurant management.
