What's it like to be a Bartender?
A Bartender’s main task is to concoct drinks for their customers and provide customer service to their guests. They use their knowledge which they learn from other Bartenders, to mix alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic drinks. Some Bartenders also make their own drinks. When not mixing and serving drinks, the responsibilities of the job include managing bar operations, tracking inventory, maintaining utensils and other related tasks. Most Bartenders work late nights and on weekends which are the peak business hours for bars.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing, cleaning, and maintaining the bar area for operations.
- Taking orders, payments, and serving customers.
- Recommending, preparing and mixing drinks for customers.
- Restocking ingredients, ice, and bar disposables such as straws, napkins, and more.
- Closing the bar register and accounting for end-of-day sales.
How to become a Bartender
You don’t need formal education to work as a Bartender. However, having a hotel and restaurant or business related degree with knowledge and experience in preparing classic cocktails can help you in becoming a successful Bartender.
- Obtain relevant training in identifying, preparing, creating, and improving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. You can learn this by starting as a Barback, a starting position in helping more senior Bartenders manage a bar. Use this stage as a learning opportunity to learn the trade of bartending and how it operates.
- Learn how to use and maintain bar equipment. Take time to learn how to use beer taps and how to clean them. This also includes methods in keeping a clean bar and how to wash utensils properly and efficiently.
- Take educational courses such as the TESDA bartender course to expand your knowledge on bartending. Some courses also include theatrics such as the art of pouring drinks. Having this knowledge enhances your skill as a Bartender.
- Consider leveraging your bartending experience to become a Bar Owner. Using your wealth of knowledge in bar operations for both front and back of house can lead to opportunities in co-owning or managing your own bar.
