What's it like to be a Barista?
Typically working in cafés, Baristas are known for their high level of skill in preparing and brewing coffee or tea. They employ several techniques to extract the desired flavors from different types of coffee beans or tea leaves, and are able to offer more coffee or tea choices to customers by combining these caffeine-based drinks with different types of milk, creams, and other add-ons.
Tasks and duties
- Taking down customer orders and managing the till at the register.
- Preparing and serving coffee or tea.
- Promoting and recommending food items to customers.
- Answering customer questions regarding food and drinks available.
- Managing availability of inventory.
- Maintaining machine equipment and reporting problems to store management.
Most employers train Baristas in customer service skills since they are positioned at the front of house to greet guests. Some employers also task them to suggest pastries that pair well with the drinks they serve and also manage the register as part of their duties.
How to become a Barista
You can work as a Barista without any experience. Some employers may prefer candidates who have completed at least senior high school or their second year in college. Good customer service skills and experience serving food and drink may be preferred by coffee establishments.
- Learn about the coffee and tea varieties. Having this knowledge helps you understand how to prepare and brew coffee beans or tea leaves. This also allows you to answer questions related to the drinks being served.
- Sharpen your knowledge working with varieties of coffee beans and tea leaves. There are many different techniques on coffee bean roasting and tea leaf brewing which can change a drink’s flavor profile. The basic methods for roasting and tea brewing are usually taught on the job or can be learned through seminars conducted by local coffee associations such as the Philippine Coffee Board or informal groups such as the Philippine Tea Enthusiasts Association.
- To advance in your career as a Barista, a business management, food & beverage related degree, or a barista certification course from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) can lead to leadership positions. With experience, you can also start your own café business.
