What's it like to be a Sales Associate?
Sales Associates are typically employed in retail shops that offer goods or services. Their main task is to ensure that customers have a pleasant buying experience by making them feel welcome, answering their queries, and guiding them in their purchase. They also address customer complaints, and assist clients in making refunds and product exchanges.
Tasks and duties
- Providing excellent customer service.
- Informing customers of deals and promotions.
- Helping in boosting store sales.
- Assisting customers in making the right purchase.
- Recommending products to customers.
- Ensuring strong knowledge on a wide variety of products and services.
- Maintaining a polite and professional attitude to uphold the company’s image.
- Arranging displays and properly storing merchandise.
- Restocking supplies.
- Managing inventory.
- Receiving product deliveries.
Also called Retail Salespersons, Sales Associates need to be constantly updated on the company’s offerings to promote them. At times, they may need to conduct product demonstrations, and maintain the orderliness of the store.
How to become a Sales Associate
Formal education may be an advantage when becoming a Sales Associate. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are important to pick up on non-verbal cues and alter sales strategies when dealing with different clients.
- 1.Finish tertiary education. While some employers are open to hiring high school graduates, most still prefer a vocational diploma or a college degree. You can also complete a certificate course related to sales or marketing to boost your resume.
- 2.Gain at least a year of work experience. Some entry-level roles you can try are Sales Representative, Customer Service Representative, and Sales Support. With these positions, you learn skills and knowledge in product selling and interacting with clients.
- 3.Advance your career. After working as a Sales Associate, you can move on to Senior Sales Associate, Sales Manager, or Store Manager.
