What's it like to be an Electrical Engineer?
Electrical Engineers are in charge of the electrical equipment at power plants and industrial plants, as well as on watercraft and electric locomotives. They manufacture and maintain electrical supply and utilization equipment such as power transformers, generators, and switchboards. They also lend their expertise in the sale and distribution of equipment and systems.
Tasks and duties
- Advising employees on electrical engineering requirements.
- Investigating electrical engineering issues.
- Evaluating cost requirements and service needs.
- Designing and preparing plans for power plants, systems, and power distribution.
- Supervising the building, installation, testing and commissioning of power plants, substations, transmission lines, and industrial plants.
- Supervising the manufacturing, operation, and maintenance of electrical equipment.
Electrical Engineers provide consultation, investigation, valuation and management services regarding electrical engineering. They can work in development and manufacturing, or in government agencies. They may take on roles such as Technical Support Engineer, Electrical Installer, Electrical Field Service Engineer, Electrical Technician, Engineering Technician, or Electrical Engineer.
How to become an Electrical Engineer
An undergraduate degree in electrical engineering is required to work as an Electrical Engineer. You will also need a valid Certificate of Registration and professional license issued by the Board of Electrical Engineering.
- Complete a bachelor degree in electrical engineering.
- Apply for a Certificate of Registration with the Board of Electrical Engineering.
- Pass the Electrical Engineering Licensure Examination given by the Board of Electrical Engineering under the supervision of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC). Passing the examination allows you to be a Registered Electrical Engineer.
- Apprentice and gain experience as a Registered Electrical Engineer. Four years or more of active practice allows you to register as a Professional Electrical Engineer.
