What's it like to be an Engineer?
Engineers design, build, and maintain various complex systems and structures, from buildings to software. They apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs. There are several engineering professions and specializations that exist.
Tasks and duties
- Staying up to date with international engineering trends.
- Identifying and addressing problems.
- Supervising production.
- Estimating costs and timelines.
- Conducting research and applying new knowledge.
- Designing processes, materials, tools and systems.
- Making improvements to existing processes and materials.
- Implementing solutions and designs.
- Training other engineering personnel.
How to become an Engineer
If you want to become an Engineer, you must earn a bachelor degree in engineering. Engineering is a five-year degree program designed to teach the basic principles of science and mathematical tools used in the field. Engineering programs have a range of courses to choose from, including civil, computer or industrial engineering.
- 1.Earn a bachelor degree in engineering. Engineering is a technical field that takes five years to finish.
- 2.You have to complete On-the-Job Training or an internship with various companies or government agencies. The company or agency that will be assigned to you will vary depending on which engineering course you are specializing in. This internship program allows you to apply your knowledge and skills in an actual work setting.
- 3.Pass the licensure examination for an Engineer. The licensure examination is administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).
- 4.You may pursue a career in any company that focuses on your specific engineering discipline. You may apply as a Structural Engineer, Project Engineer, Staff Engineer, Associate Engineer, Aerospace Engineer, Biomedical Engineer, Nuclear Engineer, or Petroleum Engineer.
