What's it like to be a Geologist?
Geologists are professionals who study the Earth's solid and liquid matter, including rocks, minerals, and the history of life as recorded in fossils. They utilize a range of tools and techniques to understand and predict natural phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis. Geologists may work in various industries such as oil and gas, environmental consulting, and governmental organizations. Many Geologists often conduct field work in outdoor settings, exploring new environments and collecting samples. As a Geologist, you may also work in a laboratory setting, examining samples under microscopes, or perform computer modeling.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting field studies to collect information about the Earth's composition and structure.
- Analyzing geological data using specialized software.
- Creating geologic maps and reports based on the results of fieldwork and laboratory research.
- Advising construction and engineering projects on geological hazards and mineral extraction.
- Planning and implementing exploration field studies for minerals, oil, and gas.
- Forecasting geological phenomena such as erosion, earthquakes or volcanic activity using geophysical data.
