What's it like to be a Human Resources Assistant?
Human Resources Assistants are entry-level employees who usually work in companies with a HR team or department. They support higher level employees within the department and report to a HR Manager or similar superior. They are mostly responsible for administrative tasks and serve as the point of communication between their department and the rest of the office.
Tasks and duties
- Taking messages and accomplishing clerical tasks for superiors in the HR department.
- Filing, maintaining, updating, and safeguarding HR records.
- Supporting the HR department in setting up and executing company events.
- Contacting and collecting requirements from company applicants.
- Coordinating new HR policies, reminders, and inquiries for company employees.
- Assisting payroll processing.
- Liaising between the company and government institutions for the processing of government transactions and benefits for employees.
How to become a Human Resources Assistant
This is an entry-level position for those looking to gain experience in the HR industry. Candidates are often graduates of human resources or psychology courses, although those with prior administrative experience may also be considered for the job.
- Graduate from a bachelor degree program in human resources, psychology, behavioral science, or another related field.
- Pursue an internship at the human resources department of a recognized company for on-the-job experience.
- Consider becoming a specialist in recruitment, risk management, or employee and labor relations. You can complete qualifications to specialize in an HR field, gain relevant work experience, or take certificate courses such as Certificate in Industrial Relations and Human Resources.
- Get promoted to higher roles such as Human Resources Administrator or Human Resources Manager.
- Consider getting a postgraduate degree in human resources management to advance into top management, such as Human Resources Director.
