What's it like to be a Network Specialist?
A Network Specialist is an information technology expert responsible for designing, managing and maintaining an organization’s computer network. This involves troubleshooting and resolving any network-related issues for optimal performance and system availability, managing network security measures and periodically updating networking systems. Network Specialists may work for a range of industries such as business corporations, educational institutions, governments and health care facilities.
Tasks and duties
- Designing and implementing new network solutions and improving the efficiency of current networks.
- Installing, configuring and supporting network equipment including routers, proxy servers, switches, Wide Area Network (WAN) accelerators, Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
- Assessing network performance and ensuring systems remain reliable and secure.
- Analyzing, troubleshooting and resolving network system issues.
- Conducting regular network performance tests, maintenance and system upgrades.
- Training staff on new systems and first-level support.
- Developing and deploying strategies for maintaining network infrastructure.
