What's it like to be a Secretary?
A Secretary is in charge of creating and filing documents, timetables, and correspondence for an office. Unlike Administrative Assistants who have decision-making duties, Secretaries are assigned mostly clerical work and undertake tasks behind-the-scenes in an office. Their duties mostly involve paperwork, but they may also be assigned ad-hoc tasks for administrative support and may be the first point of contact for customers.
Tasks and duties
- Recording meeting minutes.
- Organizing and filing company documents.
- Answering phone calls, emails, and other correspondence.
- Greeting and assisting customers and visitors.
- Scheduling meetings, flights, and other bookings.
- Operating office equipment such as photocopy and fax machines.
How to become a Secretary
A bachelor degree is required for this role, as is the ability to multitask and maintain confidentiality.
- 1.Graduate with a bachelor degree in business administration or another related field.
- 2.Complete an internship in administrative work at a recognized company.
- 3.Volunteer as a Secretary at community events and organizations to gain experience.
- 4.Advance to higher roles such as Executive Assistant or Office Manager.
