Social Media Managers create content strategies, study user data, foster customer service, and oversee projects. Their ultimate goal is to gain a strong online following for a company, and increase social media engagement and sales. With their knowledge in digital marketing, they use social media to promote products or services, and interact with the public. They may produce content themselves or manage a creative team of writers, video editors, photographers, and graphic artists.
Tasks and duties
- Formulating social media strategies to market an organization’s brand.
- Ensuring that campaigns are in line with a company’s marketing plans.
- Meeting targets by examining competitor activity, improving brand awareness, and presenting status and progress reports to upper management.
- Supervising a company’s activities across social media channels.
- Creating appealing content or delegating content creation tasks.
- Developing and supervising social media and digital marketing campaigns.
- Monitoring and reporting social media performance.
- Setting goals to measure project success.
Social Media Managers may work in a digital marketing agency or an organization’s marketing department. It is a full-time or part-time role that combines marketing and communications.
How to become a Social Media Manager
A degree is usually required to become a Social Media Manager. It is important to have knowledge of marketing and communications and industry experience.
- 1.Finish a college degree. While there’s no required course for a Social Media Manager, a degree in communication, journalism or advertising will hone your communication skills. A business-related course can give you marketing knowledge useful for this role.
- 2.Gain at least three to five years of work experience. Social Media Manager is a mid-level role that requires leadership and project management skills. Land an entry-level role in marketing, public relations, advertising, sales or customer service to learn the ropes.
- 3.Gain social media experience and learn how to manage multimedia tools for content creation. Roles such as Social Media Specialist or Social Media Associate may give you relevant knowledge.
- 4.Continue learning, so you can keep up with social media trends and digital marketing technologies. Take additional classes, read articles, and study emerging shifts.
