What's it like to be a Telecommunications Engineer?
Telecommunications Engineers ensure that telephone, internet, and broadcast communications are transmitted smoothly. Their work happens both in-office for testing wireless systems and onsite when inspecting telecommunications wires for optimization and repairs. Troubleshooting, problem-solving, analysis, and communication are key skills for the job. Telecommunications Engineers work for phone and internet corporations, radio and TV stations, and video surveillance companies.
Tasks and duties
- Designing and installing wires and cables for telecommunications systems.
- Installing internet routers and telephones for corporate and private customers.
- Testing installations for optimization and repairs.
- Overseeing the construction of wooden poles, steel towers, and satellites.
- Documenting technical drawings and project details for electronic system design.
- Debugging and troubleshooting electronic systems.
- Managing network synchronization and bandwidth availability.
Telecommunications Engineers generally have an above-average proficiency in mathematics and competency in both the hardware (assembling and installing electronics) and software (programming) components of the job.
How to become a Telecommunications Engineer
A bachelor degree and PRC license are necessary to work as a Telecommunications Engineer. As you progress in your career, you may elect to specialize in either of these components. Telecommunications Engineers are expected to be proficient in various technologies, such as DNS, LAN, WLAN, and WAN, work in outdoor conditions for on-ground installments, and handle customer and client service.
Graduate with a bachelor degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
Complete an internship at a telecommunications or broadcast company.
Take and pass the PRC Electronics Engineers Licensure Examination.
Consider postgraduate education in Telecommunications Engineering.
