What's it like to be a Director?
Director is a senior position in a company in charge of making key decisions for the business. Directors may be an executive and run the day-to-day operations of a business. Non-executive directors, meanwhile, are involved in the policymaking of a company. They usually serve on boards who are responsible for hiring management, evaluating company performance, and deciding the financial and strategic direction of a business.
Tasks and duties
- Overseeing a business’ finances, operations and projects.
- Developing a company’s business strategy.
- Evaluating company performance and determining KPIs.
- Hiring senior management such as the CEO, COO and CFO.
- Creating and implementing company policies.
- Fostering good business relationships with partners and stakeholders.
- Representing the company at press and social events.
How to become a Director
- Complete a bachelor degree in business management, finance, economics or a related field.
- Gain work experience. You could pursue business experience through school organizations, exchange programs or volunteer work. Or you could undertake an internship in the management department of a company.
- Consider advancing your career with a postgraduate degree such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
- Gain several years of work experience, ideally in leadership positions that progress your management skills.
