What's it like to be a Project Engineer?
Project Engineers plan, establish, and forecast project expectations, and ensure the efficiency of all the elements involved in a project. They manage and delegate tasks to maximize team performance and they also perform project reviews and inspections. Project Engineers also coordinate closely with clients to gather and analyze necessary information that is required for the project.
Tasks and duties
- Supervising, coordinating, and scheduling activities for the repair, renovation, or construction of a project.
- Studying project specifications by going through the product or project designs, customer requirements, and performance quality.
- Determining project costs and the number of workers needed.
- Writing reports and evaluations for the purpose of transparency.
- Analyzing problems on site and providing efficient solutions or alternatives.
- Overseeing progress of a project.
- Reviewing designs, specifications, scheduling changes, and offering recommendations.
Project Engineers study the materials that will be used and can identify the kind of labor needed. They inform other employees about new changes specified by the client, and they adapt accordingly to adhere to the given timeline.
How to become a Project Engineer
Project Engineers lead a team of professionals, so an extensive educational background and training are necessary to excel in this career. Some employers require that you have three to four years of training prior to employment.
- During your last two years of high school, take the STEM strand (Science, Technology, and Mathematics). The courses offered in this strand will help prepare you for the more advanced engineering principles in college.
- Take a bachelor degree in engineering, business management, or construction management. In these programs, you will learn about basic business practices, manufacturing processes, technical communications, and even accounting.
- You can also consider taking a masters degree in engineering if you’re in the pursuit of a management position.
- Complete training. On-the-job training typically lasts for six months to a year. Some people take training courses but most opt for internships while schooling.
- You can also obtain certifications to showcase your skills and expand your job prospects.
- Look for employment opportunities in government agencies, architecture firms, or construction companies where you will most likely work in an office working regular hours.

I like that I learned different fields of engineering in actual work. You need all fields to complete the project. From civil, to mechanical, and electrical.
The challenges
There was slim to no chance of being promoted. There were also no development programs for the employees in the company.
